Davis Police MRAP Just One Of Hundreds Of Items Acquired From Military Surplus In Yolo County

DAVIS (CBS13) — The biggest crime-fighting tool for the Davis Police Department came from the Pentagon's military surplus program, but it won't be here much longer.
The Davis City Council voted on Tuesday to get rid of the mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle after protests from dozens of people.
That vehicle is just one of hundreds of military weapons acquired in Yolo County.
The MRAP arrived two weeks ago, free of charge from the military surplus program, like one in Butte County that arrived earlier this year.
The arrival of the items isn't unusual. Yolo County has received hundreds of items like a bomb/high-risk detection device worth $193,000, and two armored trucks worth more than $130,000 combined.
Davis Police say they will abide by the council and public's wishes. The City Council says it will use the next two months to find out if a replacement vehicle should be purchased for police, and it will revisit its guidelines for receiving military equipment.
