Davis Police Arrest Suspect For Series Of Sexual Assaults At Library
DAVIS (CBS13) -- A man wanted in connection to a series of sexual assaults on a teenage boy in Davis is now behind bars.
Dennis Lee Azevedo, 59, was taken into custody Saturday from his 11th Street home by Davis police.
The alleged assaults happened at the bathroom inside the Davis Branch Yolo County Library.
A CBS13 crew was confronted by the neighborhood watch captain where Azevedo lives. He was outraged when he heard Azevedo was arrested. He called Azevedo a gentleman and says he was an honest man.
Azevedo is suspected of sexually assaulting a teenage boy at the library multiple times over several weeks.
Some people in the community are having a hard time believing it happened.
"It's kind of unsettling to hear that it's happening in your hometown," says Phillip Geck, who works in Davis. Geck has a
Geck has a six-year-old son whom he takes to the library. Hearing about Azevedo's arrest is making Geck think twice about where he lets his son go.
"Having a son, it makes me definitely question places he's gonna be, places he's gonna go when he's older," Geck said.
The alleged assaults happened in March. Davis police tell CBS13 the boy was too scared to come forward until recently.
"I've been to that library so many times and never would I think something like that would happen," says Brianna Reyes, who moved with her husband to Davis to raise their three children.
Reyes takes her kids to the library often and now says she's nervous to let her ten-year-old son use the bathroom by himself.
"It's scary because you don't know who is a child molester, they can just be looking like somebody off the street, you don't know so I just have to be more cautious," Reyes said.
Azevedo is now behind bars at the Yolo County Jail. He's facing charges of oral copulation and sodomy with a minor.
