North Highlands broken water main damages 3 vehicles and home

Large sinkhole was caused by burst water main in North Highlands

NORTH HIGHLANDS – A broken water main in North Highlands that caused damage to nearby vehicles and structures has been repaired.

The scene is on Mt. Auburn Court, near McDermott Drive and Elkhorn Boulevard.

While the hole appeared at the tail end of Monday's wet weather, Sacramento County officials say it appears that a water main break was the actual cause.

The break happened at around 9 p.m. Monday. Water from the broken high-pressure pipe shot out debris, blew away part of the roadway, and damaged a nearby house and three vehicles, according to the Sacramento Suburban Water District.

Video taken by a neighbor showed water shooting from the sinkhole.

A car that was parked next to the hole suffered significant damage. The home suffered noticeable damage to its roof. Additionally, 11 homes near the break were left without water for about 14 hours. The cause of the break has not been released.

Emergency crews were able to shut off the water, revealing a large sinkhole in the street.

Crews applied a temporary patch to the road.
