Coroner Identifies Child Who Died In San Joaquin River Boating Accident Near Lathrop

LATHROP (CBS13) — The coroner has identified the child who died in a boating accident on the San Joaquin River on Monday.

Jonathan Ledesma Mejia, 8, was one of 10 people who fell overboard when investigators say a boat hit rocks and overturned. Deputies say the impact caused all 10 to be thrown from the boat into the water.

Investigators say Mejia either was struck by rocks or the prop of the boat and had died before EMS personnel arrived.

At least three others on the boat had to be taken to the hospital after the crash. The five children on board were between the ages of 5 and 10.

Investigators say all the children were wearing life jackets, and charges are not expected to be filed.
