Congregation Steps Up To Help Yuba City Women's Shelter After Fire

YUBA CITY (CBS13) - Twenty women and children are homeless in Yuba City after a fire ripped through their home on Saturday.

It happened just after 1:30 a.m. at the Casa de Esperanza shelter.

"We're going to be out of our shelter for some period of time," said Marsha Krouse-Taylor, Casa de Esperanza's Executive Director.

The kitchen, the dining room, the laundry room and half of the second floor were consumed by flames.

"When I got the call that they were standing outside, needing some place to go, it was automatic that we wanted to show love to people who needed it," said Pastor David Turner, Cooper Avenue Baptist Church.

His congregation stepped in to give the women a place to rest for the night.

"We were just really happy to be able to help where we could," Turner said. "It makes me feel fortunate that nobody got hurt!"

Krouse-Taylor has been with Casa de Esperanza for the last 36 years.

"It's very hard because these are women and children who have been displaced from their homes because the very person who was supposed to love them has hurt them," she said.

Now, she's scrambling to gather as many supplies as she can.

"We've got pots and pans, just everything you would need to set up a household in order for the women to stay for the next couple of weeks," said Krouse-Taylor.

She's grateful for the supplies they've received from various organizations around town, but knows they still need more. Even through the entire ordeal, she views the displaced women as role models.

"If they can come through that and come through that with laughter and with courage, then those of us who work there can do the same thing," she said.

If you would like to donate, you can drop off items at Post Office Box 56, Yuba City, 95992. You can also contact the shelter at (530) 713-1288.
