Concrete Falls Off Interstate 80 Overpass, Narrowly Missing Several Cars
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Chunks of a busy Interstate 80 overpass came crashing down into traffic on Monday morning, and a CBS13 photographer saw it happen.
The concrete chunks fell from the I-80 overpass onto Reed Avenue in West Sacramento.
CBS13's Dave Grashoff says the biggest piece that fell off was the size of a football. By sheer chance, he happened to see the concrete give way and crash onto the pavement below.
"That's when I looked up, and was like, yeah it fell off the overpass," he said. "One was pretty big, one was almost the size of the football, and one was the size of the brick."
He stopped to shoot video of the aftermath.
Another look later showed another crack in the overpass immediately to the left of the spot that fell on Monday on the westbound span. Another spot appears to have been patched up.
A Caltrans spokesman told CBS13 that a bridge inspection crew came out and had a look, but didn't find anything structurally wrong that would put the public in danger. He said if emergency repairs were necessary, they would have been done right away.
Grashoff says the concrete missed hitting several cars by a split-second.
"I don't think those people realized how lucky they got," he said.
Caltrans said an inspection crew might be out on Tuesday morning to have a second look.
After our initial conversation with Caltrans, we sent a spokesman a picture of the damage, but he did not respond.
