Man struck, killed by SacRT shuttle bus in North Natomas
SACRAMENTO – A person was struck and killed by a Sacramento RT bus in a North Natomas neighborhood Monday morning, authorities say.
Sacramento police say the accident happened just after 8:30 a.m. near Club Center and Banfield drives.
Exactly what led up to the collision is unclear, but medics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Police say the man was in his 60s.
Officers say the driver of the bus, which was an RT Smart Ride bus, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
"Words cannot adequately address the heartache and tragedy that this accident has caused," said City Councilmember Lisa Kaplan, who represents the area. "My deepest condolences go out to the family of today's incident."
A press release issued by Kaplan's office said the councilmember, who is a Sacramento Regional Transit board member, spoke with the company's executive director and the Sacramento city manager on monday about ways to make the roadway where the collision happened safer.
Kaplan's office said it was the same location where a grandfather was killed in the same manner while on his bicycle earlier this year.
"Every day when we get in our cars, we need to put our phones down," Kaplan said. "We need to slow down and be reminded that getting somewhere one minute faster isn't worth the death of an individual. We must look out for each other, our kids, our families, and our community."
