Clash Between Napolitano, Brown Causes Uncertainty About Future UC Enrollment
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — University of California admissions officers are sifting through a record number of applications.
But they have no idea how many new students they can enroll.
The uncertainty stems from the very public clash between university President Janet Napolitano and Gov. Jerry Brown.
Napolitano argues that lawmakers have failed to give the university system enough money. She plans to raise tuition 5 percent this fall and give more slots to out-of-state students who pay more.
The governor is threatening to withhold about $120 million in state funds unless the university keeps both its tuition rates and non-resident enrollment flat.
System spokeswoman Dianne Klein says campuses could end up putting more students on wait lists while they wait for the situation to get sorted out.
