CHP: 5 Dead In Crash East Of Stockton, Fog A Factor

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (CBS13) – Authorities say that five people are dead after a crash east of Stockton Tuesday morning.

The scene is on eastbound Highway 4 near Van Allen Road. California Highway Patrol says the five killed were all riding in the same van when they hit by a pickup truck.

Investigators say the van had been heading northbound Van Allen Road and was trying to cross SR-4 when it was broadsided by a pickup truck heading eastbound. Initially, four people were reported killed in the crash, but a little later it was announced that a fifth person had died.

Three people, one from the van and two from the pickup, have been taken to the hospital. CHP says that the person from the van is suffering from major injuries.

CHP says that fog looks to be a contributing factor in the crash, noting that it is possible the drivers didn't see each other. Visibility was less than 100 feet when the crash happened, CHP says.

Investigators do not know if speed played a factor.
