Change Of Venue Requested in Sacramento Kings Arena Eminent Domain Case

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The owners of a building in the path of a new Sacramento Kings arena have asked for a change of venue in its eminent domain proceedings.

Concerned they would be seen as nothing but outsiders, the owners of the former Macy's Men's store building in Downtown Plaza have requested the move to Alameda County.

The ownership group includes the California Public Employees Retirement System and U.S. Bank.

The move for eminent domain came after the two sides couldn't reach an agreement to sell the property.

The Sacramento Kings hope to begin construction on the arena this summer with it opening in October of 2016.

This isn't the only legal trouble in the way of the arena. A judge is currently hearing a challenge to the city clerk's rejection of a possible ballot measure.

Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork filed the suit when the petitions they gathered to put a $258 million city subsidy to a public vote were thrown out because of errors in the language.

A hearing in that case is scheduled for Feb. 21.
