I-80 chain controls back up in high Sierra; heavy snow storm expected Wednesday

TRUCKEE – Chain controls were back in effect Tuesday night for the high Sierra Nevada ahead of another expected weather system Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol Truckee said the restrictions were in place for westbound I-80 travelers from Truckee to Rainbow and for eastbound travelers from Kingvale to Truckee.

No restrictions were in place on Highway 50.

Heavy snow is forecasted with this next round of weather, the bulk of which is expected Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the snowline will start around the 3,000'-4,500' level before lowering to 2000'-3000'. Hourly snowfall rates are expected to be at a rate of 1-2 inches.
