MODESTO — A Ceres man who stabbed his girlfriend multiple times before hitting her with his car earlier this year in Modesto pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, prosecutors said.

Ruben Olvera, 33, had turned himself into police on February 17 after his girlfriend, Michell Gonzalez, was found lying on a Highway 99 off-ramp in Modesto the night before, the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office said.

Olvera had been driving a vehicle with Gonzalez in the passenger seat. Prosecutors said Olvera then stabbed Gonzalez, which resulted in her jumping out of the vehicle and attempting to run away. Olvera then hit and killed her with the vehicle.

Gonzalez was later officially declared dead at an area hospital.

Olvera faces a life sentence and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 19.

According to the district attorney's office, Olvera had a history of domestic violence in the San Francisco Bay Area.
