Central Valley Veteran Gets Back Wallet He Lost In WWII
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- A World War II veteran has his lost wallet back after an Austrian doctor spotted the black square of cracked leather, still full of family photos, underneath wooden planks in a farmhouse his grandfather owned.
KFSN reports 91-year-old Eligio Ramos lost his wallet in 1945 when his battalion took shelter in the farmhouse. Some 70 years later, Doctor Josef Ruckhofer says he tracked down Ramos using an Army ID card he found in the wallet.
The two men exchanged letters, and Ruckhofer packaged and sent the wallet to California.
Ramos served with the 250th field artillery. His son, Rosando, says his dad was present at the liberation of concentration camps.
Rosando said he plans to frame every item in the wallet and display it inside the family's home.
