France Train Hero Spencer Stone Stabbed, In 'Serious Condition'

UPDATE: SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) — Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, celebrated as a hero for helping to stop a terror attack on a French train over the summer, was stabbed and seriously wounded outside a bar in his hometown early Thursday in what police said was an alcohol-related brawl.

Stone, 23, was knifed repeatedly in the upper body but was expected to survive, authorities said. He was taken to UC Davis Medical Center.

"This incident is not related to terrorism in any way," Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard said. "We know it's not related to what occurred in France months ago."

A grainy surveillance video from a camera outside a liquor store showed a man who appeared to be Stone fighting with several people at an intersection. The group spilled into the street as people took swings at each other, and one person got knocked down.

Police said two assailants fled in a car. No immediate arrests were made. They were described as Asian males wearing white shirts and blue jeans.

In a statement, the hospital said Stone's family "appreciates the outpouring of love and support" and requests privacy.

UPDATES: (3:22 p.m.) A press conference about the stabbing is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

(3:20 p.m.) Spencer's friend Alek Skarlatos tweeted: "Spencer is one tough guy. And only he could have done something like that and lived, yet again" Link

(2:24 p.m.): Stone's pastor says the stabbing is Stone's destiny.

(12:45 p.m.): Cleaners are at the scene where the fight occurred and are apparently removing blood from sidewalk.

(12:03 p.m.): Police say they have no reason to believe Stone is anything other than a victim.

(11:30 a.m.): The scene outside of Anthony Sadler's fraternity house was quiet and no one would comment on Spencer Stone's stabbing. Sadler, along with Stone and Alek Skarlatos, were the three Sacramento-area men hailed as heroes for stopping a suspected terror attack on a train in France.

(11:06 a.m.): Sacramento Police said that the attack on Spencer Stone is not related to his role in thwarting the train attack in France.

(10:55 a.m.): Mayor Kevin Johnson has sent his well-wishes to Stone's family in a tweet.

(10:53 a.m.) Police described the stabbing suspects only as two Asian male adults who were wearing white t-shirts. They reportedly left the area in a dark-grey or black 2009-2012 Toyota Camry. Police say the stabbing was not a random act, but was an incident that started in a nightclub.

(10:45 a.m.) In a statement, UC Davis Medical Center officials said Spencer Stone is listed in serious condition. They also issued a statement about his privacy. "His family requests that the media respect his right to privacy at this time..."

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Sacramento police have confirmed that France train hero Spencer Stone was stabbed early Thursday morning.

According to the Pentagon, who has confirmed Stone was injured, Spencer is in "stable condition."

"A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury. The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. He is currently in stable condition," a statement from the U.S. Air Force reads.

Initial reports listed Stone's condition as "critical."

According to CBS News, who first reported the story, Stone was stabbed repeatedly. The incident happened outside of a bar at 21st and K Streets, CBS News reports. Stone reportedly suffered a wound to the heart and his left lung.

The owner of a A&P Liquors says he has video of the incident and it appears show five to six men in a group attacking someone in an intersection. Employee Ryan Romandia saw the video and says, "All you see is an altercation in the middle of the intersection...I don't know how it started."

The Sacramento Police Department confirms that an assault occurred at the location in midtown just before 1 a.m. and are investigating. They would not say who was injured and a suspect has not been identified.

Police say the incident is "not related to a terrorist act." Alcohol looks to be a contributing factor.

Alek Skarlatos, one of the other three France train heroes from Sacramento, tweeted "Everybody send prayers out to the stone family today."
