CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Blink And You Might Miss This Brazen Stockton Burglary The First Time
STOCKTON (CBS13) — It's a brazen burglary in broad daylight you'll have to see twice.
Cameras were rolling at South Bay Auto Auction in South Stockton on Friday. It looks like a normal day as the video shows a company vehicle in the parking lot.
Another SUV pulls into the parking lot and a man gets out and goes inside. He chats with the receptionist and then leaves a few minutes later.
In that time, employees say the company vehicle was burglarized in broad daylight.
A closer look shows when the first guy gets out, he's not alone. While he's inside chatting the receptionist, another person goes to work.
Employees say he had enough time to get into the SUV and steal laptops, an iPad and cash. By the time the first man trots out, it's already done.
But how did they get into a locked car so quickly?
No windows were broken, and the locked doors weren't pried open. Instead, auction shop director Michael Phillips says the crook took a tool like a screwdriver and punched in the lock cylinder on the car.
The question that lingers for Phillips is how did they know there were valuable items in the SUV with tinted windows.
He's hoping someone recognizes the suspect who didn't seem to mind being on camera.
"That takes a lot of courage to do something like that, and like I said, cameras are everywhere," he said.
