Carmichael Woman, Son Displaced After Fire Destroys Home

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - A mother and her adult son are out of their Carmichael home Thursday morning after it was destroyed by fire.

The blaze started around 5 a.m. on Landis Avenue, say fire officials. The homeowner, Jim Robertson, tells CBS13 he woke up and smelled smoke. He then went into his mother's room and carried her to safety across the street.

They were able to get out safely, but their home is destroyed.

Firefighters say the home did not have working smoke detectors.

"I was my own smoke detector. I smelled it," said Robertson. "I ran back in, grabbed her and carried her outside and set her down…my phone, I couldn't find my phone. I went to the neighbor's house and yelled for them and they came out. I moved the car over here and the house was engulfed. I'm sure glad I got my mom out."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
