Carjacking suspect arrested after hours-long standoff at Rio Linda home

Carjacking suspect now in custody after barricading in Rio Linda home

RIO LINDA -- The carjacking suspect who allegedly drove at authorities, prompting one deputy to open fire, was arrested after an hours-long standoff at a Rio Linda home on Wednesday.

Deputies originally responded to an unrelated call in the area of 18th and L streets around 11 a.m. when they saw a woman getting carjacked. They said the suspect assaulted the woman and tried to stab her with a screwdriver while trying to steal her vehicle.

Deputies say the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Brenden Waterman, drove toward them. That's when a deputy fired a single round.

Moments later, the suspect crashed into an oncoming vehicle and ran into a home nearby. The homeowner then ran out of the house.

A SWAT team and other law enforcement officials had the home surrounded through the afternoon. Waterman later came out of the home armed with a handgun, deputies said.

Deputies said they used less lethal shotgun rounds and a K-9 to take the suspect into custody. Waterman was taken to the hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash and from the K-9.

Waterman was later booked into jail for carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder and robbery. He is not eligible for bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 1.

The woman and the other person involved in the crash suffered minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital.
