Caltrans Says Barrier Not Needed Where Chain Link Fence Stands On Business 80
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — After another crash has taken down a portion of fence along Business 80, more than a few people are wondering what can be done on the busy stretch of road.
The Marconi curve features a big sound wall, but after a couple of miles you'll see a chain link fence that's the only barrier between traffic and a frontage road that includes a stretch of Auburn Boulevard.
That's not OK with the 100 or so people who live in a nearby RV park, just a stone's throw away from high-speed traffic, and sometimes out of control drivers.
The California Highway Patrol says 53 accidents happened on that stretch between January and November, or nearly five crashes a month.
RV park manager Linda Zwetsloot saw another crash just last week.
"She was in the left lane, came across all three lanes, across Auburn Boulevard into our fence," she said.
The chain link fence has been replaced at least five times in the last three years, neighbors say, and they're looking for a better solution.
CBS13 asked Caltrans why the Marconi curve soundwall be extended along Business 80.
Caltrans gave a statement that reads in part, "Soundwalls are built to lessen the decibel levels from a freeway. They are not built to keep vehicles from entering a neighborhood or backyard."
Based on collision history and traffic volume, Caltrans has also determined the area doesn't need the need for a separation barrier.
Caltrans has promised to monitor future crashes and see if a change is needed.
