Cal Expo Fireworks Show Lights Up Night Sky With No Issues

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Thousands of people watched in awe as the sky lit up with fireworks from Cal Expo. The event marking a 4th of July Celebration.

"It's a Sacramento tradition," said one woman.

"They mix it up every year," said another man who's been to 20 years of shows.

More than 3,000 fireworks blasted off at Cal Expo. People of all ages, celebrated America.

"It's a nice family time to come out with the kids," said Donna Valles, who came to the show with 10 family members.

"We want to make sure everyone is having a great time out here," said Jennifer Castleberry. Shes the Cal Expo Marketing Director.

The fun for many started hours earlier once they passed through security check points.

"I actually appreciate there is enough security to make sure all my kids are safe," said Valles.

Staff used the typical metal detecting wands and did also had personnel conduct bag checks. But a new security feature for this year was missing -- walk through metal detectors.

"They were supposed to be in place this evening," said Castleberry, "Unfortunately, due to some flooding in New Mexico, the truck got delayed."

Inside the venue, the State Fire Marshal watched over the main event.

"We've had a deputy out overseeing what they're doing that last two or three days," said Steve Guarino, the
Chief of Fire and Life Safety with Cal Fire.

He say's they inspect the fireworks and construction of the launch site.

"We make sure the product itself, the fireworks, are state product listed and approved," said Guarino.

Two years ago the fireworks show was cut short by a grass fire in the area. Last year, a fire feet from the launch site caused the show to end early.

"It was an unfortunate accident last year," said Castleberry.

No one was hurt. The incident was ruled to be an accident and no cause was ever found.

"We saw the fire and that was it," said Taylor Abara, "we didn't even get the grand finale."

But despite past troubles, people like Taylor Abara and her family, came back for more.

"To spend time, relax, and enjoy the fireworks."
