Brothers Hope To Shine Light On Elk Grove's Only Unsolved Homicide Case
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — The cold-blooded killings of two grandfathers in Elk Grove remains a mystery and the city's only unsolved homicide case.
Two crosses mark the spot along East Stockton Boulevard where two men were killed on March 4, 2011.
What led up to the murders of Surinder Singh and his good friend Gurmej Atwal is still so baffling to so many.
Elk Grove Det. Kevin Papineau has been on the case from Day 1.
"They were out for their walk and they had sat down to talk as they did everyday," he said.
Shots fired from a passing vehicle hit both of them on 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. Singh died instantly, while Atwal survived for six weeks.
The prevailing theory filtered through the crowds that gathered to honor the victims in the days that followed—it may have been a hate crime. It wouldn't be the first time members of the Sikh religion would be mistaken for Muslims and targeted.
But the leads dried up, and the investigation went cold. So Elk Grove Police got creative.
Two brothers, Corey and Craig Jackson, made it their mission to launch a locally produced crime-solving TV program and highlight the Elk Grove double murders.
"Two grandfathers--hear me grandfathers--their lives were taken for no reason--in the community that my brother and I grew up in," Craig Jackson said.
The two made it their mission to launch a new, locally produced crime-solving TV program and highlight the Elk Grove double murder.
They're hoping the re-enactments and revival of the crime will inspire witnesses to step forward. Also there to help is a $57,000 reward on the table for information leading to an arrest. chances are, that will go up even more.
