WEST SACRAMENTO – A man is under arrest after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in West Sacramento late Wednesday night.

West Sacramento police say officers responded to a shooting along the 300 block of Bridge Place after a juvenile called to report the shooting. CBS Sacramento confirmed the victim was Betty Manyea Cummings.

Cummings' family said she was ambushed by her ex-boyfriend when she got home from celebrating her daughter's fifth-grade graduation. A vigil was held by her loved ones Thursday night.

The juvenile who made the call to police was one of Cummings' children. When officers arrived at the home, they found the child outside the home. More officers were then assembled and they prepared to approach the house.

The suspect, who police identified as Demond Jones, soon came out of the garage and was detained by officers. Officers then went into the garage, pulled the Cummings to safety, then started first aid before medics arrived and took over.

Police say she had a gunshot wound to her upper back; she later died at the hospital. Jones also had a gunshot wound to his left foot.

Officers say they found a gun hidden in a bush in front of the home.

Jones was medically cleared before being booked into Yolo County Jail.
