Armed suspect arrested after barricading self at south Sacramento residence

South Sacramento standoff after chase ends with an arrest

SACRAMENTO — A south Sacramento street turned into a collision course for a driver in a high-speed chase on Monday.

That pursuit ended on a front lawn of a home on 41st Avenue, with the suspect then barricading himself in a backyard shed. The California Highway Patrol South Sacramento division said the chase started out of a traffic violation.

Before he holed up in a backyard shed, the suspect crashed his SUV through a fence, leaving debris everywhere. Authorities said he surrendered shortly after 5:30 p.m.

The woman who lives in the home said she didn't even know the suspect was there until sheriff's deputies knocked on her door.

"We were in the house and didn't see anything happening. [The deputies] came in and they said, 'We'll be in here for a while,' and they were yelling to him in the yard and they took the dogs out there. Then after a while, they said, 'We think we'll have to bring the SWAT team, so you people will have to leave,' " homeowner Mary Hamlet, 76, told CBS13.

Jose Sandoval lives next door and watched as the suspect drove over his front lawn, right by the swingsets his grandchildren use.

"It could be bad, really bad," Sandoval said while showing CBS13 the crash scene. "So he make (sic) it all the way from here, right through the yard, and he tried to go that way, but it was full of cars parking in the driveway."

The CHP is identifying the suspect as 38-year-old Tony Phillips. He is now booked into Sacramento County Jail on a charge of evading police and felon in possession of a firearm.

Online jail records show he is ineligible for bail.No further details were available at this time.
