Coronavirus Closures: Arden Fair Mall Closes Indefinitely

ARDEN (CBS13) - Sacramento's Arden Fair Mall is closing indefinitely over the coronavirus.

The mall is the region's largest retail center and one of Sacramento's largest sources of tax revenue. It holds 165 businesses with more than 1,000 employees.

The company issued the following statement Tuesday evening: "In an effort to protect the health and safety of our employees, guests, and community and to further slow the spread of COVID-19, Arden Fair is closed temporarily. We encourage you to check ardenfair.com for up-to-the-moment information."

Lucas Aranga works at the mall as an employee at Kevin Jewelers.

"I have no idea what to do right now," Aranga said. "I didn't receive any status change so as far as I know I'm still employed. My mall is closed so I can't do anything about that."

Aranga picked up his final paystub after the announced closure and is preparing to file a claim with the state for lost wages.

The closure comes as Sacramento's largest hotel, the Hyatt Regency, also announced it will close effective Wednesday through May 10. Some 200 workers will be impacted.

These closures were announced hours after Sacramento County announced stricter guidelines for the county to slow the spread of COVID-19, including asking residents to stay home as much as possible.
