Anthem College Students Worry About Future Of Their Degrees

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) – Instead of classes being held today at the Anthem College campus in Ranch Cordova, students met with representatives from the Department of Consumer Affairs to try and figure out what's next.

"They are assisting students to retrieve their transcripts, their financial aid documents and get their federal loans discharged," said Cristina Valdivia, spokesperson for consumer affairs.

Valdivia says if the school closes, students can apply to get rid of their loans and a reimbursement for any funds paid out of pocket.

"It's comforting to know that they're doing everything they can to help us. They aren't just kicking the students to the curb," student Brian Miller-Pattee said.

Michele Serrano just started a dental assistant program at Anthem College. She says she'll have to transfer to Carrington College, farther away from home, to finish her degree.

"They are saying that our tuition might go up. Yesterday it was a different story; they were saying it was going to stay the same," Serrano said.

But student Natasha Russell says she's having a harder time finding a place to go.

"My focus is pharmacy technician, and not all the schools here that I could transfer to. They don't have that," Russell said.

No answers for those students today. But, a statement from Anthem College reads in part:

"Our foremost goal has always been the well-being of our students. We remain hopeful we will be able to complete our proposed sale of an additional 14 schools to international education corporation through our Chapter 11 process."

Students like Serrano hope so, too.

"I like going here. The hours, the evening classes, it just all works out for me," Serrano said.

Students say they should receive and email by noon Friday with an update on whether or not the campus is closing down.
