Investigators: Mom Stashed Baby In Amber Alert In Duffel Bag

SIERRA COUNTY (CBS13) — A baby at the center of an Amber Alert was stashed away in a duffel bag by the child's mother, investigators said on Tuesday.

Henry Massey was found after a store clerk spotted the boy's mother in a Downieville grocery store. The clerk was able to flag down a California Highway Patrol officer who took the boy's mother, Hannah Ashley, into custody after a struggle.

Investigators say the baby was found stashed away in a duffel bag, but he appears to be in good health.

Massey was reported missing after Ashley allegedly took the infant from his grandmother's home on Sunday. An Amber Alert was activated in the disappearance on Monday afternoon.

A reported sighting of the vehicle on Monday evening prompted a search in Sierra County that didn't turn up the vehicle. The next morning, a Sierra County Sheriff's deputy saw the car on Highway 49 heading toward Downieville, but that officer lost sight of the vehicle—the vehicle was spotted at around 6:40 a.m., but sunrise wasn't until 7:26 a.m. in the area.
