76-Foot-Tall Billboard Raises Ire Of Elk Grove Residents
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — A big billboard is causing problems in Elk Grove, as residents debate whether the sign is too tall.
Bond Road is one of the main connectors to shops and restaurants in Elk Grove. But one developer wants to push more business to that area.
That's why he is proposing a 76-foot-tall sign.
"That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard," says resident Jeff Germany.
He's appalled at the idea of the tall billboard, saying the sign with its fiberglass elk doesn't belong at the Bond Laguna Interchange.
"Why in the heck would you do that?" he said.
Proponents of the billboard hope it will entice more shoppers to turn off of the freeway and into the parking lots of local restaurants, stores and even car washes.
"I think it's a good idea for the businesses because it will drive people off the freeway to Elk Grove and show them which businesses are out here," said Hailey Nelson.
Businesses like Chi-Fil-A like it, too. The chicken sandwich shop already uses a cow to entice customers, but the owner also wrote a letter supporting the sign. He says that the restaurant would be able to hire more than its current 65 employees if it had a boost in business.
If approved by the planning commission, the billboard would stand more than 20 feet higher than the Elk Grove Auto Mall sign across the freeway.
And it appears this may not be the only sign of its size. The developer says he has plans to push forward another such billboard a miles up the road at the Sheldon offramp.
