49ers Trade TE Vernon Davis To Broncos For Draft Picks

by Russell Preston, KHTK Sacramento

According to multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers have traded Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis (as well as a 2016 7th round draft pick) to the Denver Broncos for two 6th round picks (2016 and 2017).

"On behalf of entire 49ers organization, I would like to thank Vernon for his decade of contributions to this team & our community," 49ers GM Trent Baalke said in a statement regarding the trade.

While Davis, 31,  has been rather quiet on the football field since 2013, his potential to be a top-tier tight end is still there. His 18 receptions for 194 yards in six game this season are second and third on the team respectively.

The 2-6 49ers are a completely different scene for Davis, who will now join Peyton Manning and the 7-0 Broncos. Talk about an upgrade.

Broncos GM John Elway tweeted out his reaction to the trade on Monday: "He'll be a valuable addition to our team w/his experience & leadership."

It's not completely clear if Davis formally requested a trade, but with several reports detailing locker room altercations involving Davis, the writing was on the wall that his time in a 49ers uniform was almost up. The Broncos will pay the remaining $2.51 million of his salary this season.

He will leave the 49ers organization as one of the best tight ends the franchise has seen. He played in 139 games, caught 441 passes for 5,640 yards and 55 touchdowns. He holds the franchise record for tight ends in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns.
