2 Charged With Hate Crime Against UC Davis Student

DAVIS (CBS13) — A hate crime is under investigation at a UC Davis apartment complex involving suspects who are not students.

UC Davis Junior Alecia Anaya lives in the apt. complex where campus police are investigating a hate crime.

"I was shocked that it happened here," she said.

Officers were called out to the West Village Apartments off of Hutchison around 3 a.m. on Monday by a female student reporting an assault.

The reportedly intoxicated suspects in the case threw items at the victim at the same time harassing her with racial slurs.

Police were able find the suspects still in the area, and arrested 22-year-old Jake Lee, 24-year-old Lonny Doyal Lee both of west Sacramento and 22-year-old Justin Sheppard of Sacramento.

All three were charged with public intoxication while two of them were charged with assault and hate crimes. The suspects are not students at the school.

Sophomore Tayler Ward applauds campus police for their quick action, but like other African-American students we spoke with knows that this kind of hate crime still occurs.

"To be honest I think with everything that's happening in the world it's not that surprising in the scheme of things," she said.

The victim did not require hospitalization.
