1 shot, 1 beaten at party on Halloween night in North Highlands

Fight, shooting lead to Halloween night of horror for North Highlands neighborhood

NORTH HIGHLANDS – A Halloween bash ended with a brawl before erupting in gunfire in one Sacramento County city.

Deputies arrived just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to a short-term rental on the 4100 block of Cornelia Way in North Highlands to find a man who was shot and another person who was so badly beaten around his head that deputies initially thought someone shot him.

Neighbors say the well-kept home has turned into a source of problems in the area.

According to deputies, 50-plus people took to the streets to fight before shots rang out. While people dialed 911, the Sacramento  County Sheriff's Office said it also received a nine-round ShotSpotter activation from the same area.

"There's a school right in the back of us. There's a lot of families around here," said a homeowner who asked to remain anonymous. "So if you have one house that's causing all this trouble, it's not good."

Authorities say not many witnesses were cooperating, including partygoers and the owner of the short-term rental.

Some short-term rental companies, like Airbnb, went so far as to enforce an anti-party policy this Halloween. An Airbnb spokesperson confirmed to CBS13 that it did not have a reservation listed at the address during the Halloween celebrations.

Ultimately, neighbors say hosts should think twice about who stays in their short-term rental.

"The owner is responsible for either screening who's going to be there or having some sort of surveillance to give them a heads up if something like this is going on," another neighbor said. "Something has to happen."
