First Alert Weather: Another powerful storm moves across Northern California
A strong storm is hitting northern California and it will bring widespread rain & snow to our area.
Sinkhole in Amador County
A growing sinkhole has prompted a lane closure along Highway 49 near the community of Jackson on Wednesday.
CHP says a lane closure is in effect on the highway south of Kennedy Mine Road.
Drivers are being urged to be careful when heading through the area.
Homes buried by snow
Homes in the Sierra will have to dig out again, if they even were able to at all before.
One house we passed by off of Soda Springs Road looked completely buried by the snow. Only its roof could be seen.
Sierra snow totals
The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab says they've now passed the 700" benchmark for the season Wednesday.
A significant amount of snow has fallen at the research area over the past day, scientists say, with 20.7".
Scientists say they've now seen a total of 713.8" since Oct. 1.
Some schools starting late
Some schools in the foothills and high country are on a late start on Wednesday due to the weather.
The Grass Valley School District says campus will be closed until school starts at 11 a.m. City crews are clearing walkways and roads to make access to school sites safe.
Sierra College's Nevada County Campus has also canceled all classes and activities scheduled before 11 a.m. The college will be reevaluating the situation at 9 a.m. and will make a decision from there about the rest of the day.
I-80 EB still closed, WB open over Donner Summit
The CHP Truckee said eastbound I-80 remains closed at Applegate due to vehicle spinouts over Donner Summit. Westbound I-80 is open.

I-80 closed in both directions in Sierra
The CHP Truckee said Interstate 80 was fully shut down between Colfax and the Nevada state line due to multiple vehicle spinouts.
The closure was announced at around 3:30 p.m. and there was no clear time for when it would be lifted.
I-80 crash in Sacramento
An overturned box truck is blocking all lanes along southbound Business 80 near the I-80 junction.
Traffic is backing up nearly into Downtown Sacramento.
Drivers should avoid the area or expect heavy delays, Caltrans says.
More chain controls
Caltrans says chain controls are now in effect on Highway 50 from 3 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers.
Chain controls went up earlier Tuesday morning on I-80. However, Caltrans has since updated their control area: eastbound traffic has chain controls from 3.4 miles east of Gold Run in Placer County to Hirschdale Road in Truckee.
For westbound I-80 drivers in the Sierra, chain controls are in place from Truckee to 3.4 miles of Gold Gun.
Dangerous Sierra travel
Road conditions are continuing to deteriorate in the Sierra. Drivers are being urged to avoid travel if at all possible.
Chain controls
CHP says chain controls are now in effect on both directions of I-80 from Trukcee to Nyack.
For the moment, there are no restrictions on Highway 50.
Sacramento opens weather respite centers
The City of Sacramento says they are opening weather respite centers through Wednesday morning.
One location, at the Outreach and Engagement Center, is open 24 hours.
The other, at the North Fifth Street Shelter lobby, is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Sac RT can provide free rides to and from the centers.
More snow on the way
Homes in the Sierra are set to get another layer of snow with this storm.
Some homes still haven't fully dug out of the past storms -- making roof collapses an ongoing issue.
School closures due to the storm
All schools at Tahoe Truckee Unified School District have announced that they will be closed on Tuesday because of the storm.
According to the school district, all school activities are also canceled unless otherwise notified.
