Zelienople Leaders Thankful To Mysterious Donor Who Makes July 4th Celebration Possible
ZELIENOPLE (KDKA) -- A mysterious donor has once again come through in a local community, and it's their gift of gold that will help pay for the red, white and blue.
Thanks to a loyal and mysterious donor, this year's Fourth of July fireworks display in Zelienople will go on as planned.
Zelienople Community Park Director Alecia Flood found a rare gold coin in a donation jar last weekend for the seventh year in a row.
"It's a one-ounce Liberty Coin, United States of America, and it's 1898, the year," says Flood.
Flood began the Pennies for the Pool fundraiser six years ago when a limited budget threatened the park's pool slide and annual July 4th fireworks show.
"They needed $17,000 for the slide; I didn't want that to go away because it's a gem in our small community. So, I said we need to fix the problem," Flood said.
Flood found an unfamiliar coin at Wescobank. She was not sure what she had until bringing the coin to a local jeweler.
"Once he told me it was one ounce and what gold went for at the time, I was super thrilled because that took us to the amount that we needed for fireworks that year," she said.
Though Flood never expects a coin donation, she admits this year's Fourth of July display could not be possible without the 1898 Liberty Coin found last weekend.
"It's so nice that there are people out there who are able to spread their joy amongst the rest of us in the community," said Lisa Salak, the assistant pool manager.
