Boy injured in hit-and-run crash in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 4-year-old boy was injured by a hit-and-run driver on Thursday in Pittsburgh.

The crash happened on the 2000 block of Webster Ave. in the Bedford Dwellings neighborhood at around 4 p.m. Officials said they found the boy in the middle of the street. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene.

A parent of the boy was with him when he was hit, officials said.

"People go through these two stop signs all the time," said Vicki Jeter, who lives in the neighborhood. "We have an elementary school and a day care. I started calling at the beginning of this year weekly. ... We need speed bumps. We need these for these children."

Pittsburgh Public Safety said the boy "was initially in and out of consciousness" and was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition.

Police are working to get a description of the driver's vehicle.

"It's broad daylight," Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Emily Bourne said. "We don't have any kind of dangerous road conditions. It's dry, it's sunny, it's clear. There were no obstructions to the stop signs that are here. I would say a driver made a clear decision to not stop at these stop signs."

Neighbors told KDKA-TV that they've been asking the city for more than a year to put speed bumps in to force drivers to slow down.

"We need somebody to come in and look at the Hill District because there's too much going on, there's too much. For a child to get hit out there and then them to drive off," neighbor Andrew Swane said.
