WVU Fans Riot After Win Over Baylor, Several Arrested
MORGANTOWN W. Va. (KDKA) – The West Virginia Mountaineers pulled off a shocking upset over No. 4 Baylor Saturday afternoon. However, the fans are making more headlines than the players on the field.
Following the Mountaineers' 41-27 win, fans took to celebrating throughout the streets of Morgantown.
Around 10:28 p.m., multiple street parties were reported to Morgantown Police.
While the street parties appear to have started in the Sunnyside neighborhood, there were other reports from the Central Business District as well.
According to police, people pushed over street lights, which resulted in several thousand dollars worth of damage. Several construction sites around town were also broken into. Multiple fires were also reported throughout the city.
Some people threw rocks, beer bottles and other objects at public safety officials.
"Just madness," said WVU student Travis Aber. "The whole thing was wild, the craziest night of my life so far."
At that point, police declared these events to be riots. When the crowds failed to disperse, officers used pepper spray and other chemical munitions.
One student says she was sprayed in the face.
"He said, 'I told you guys all to stay back,' and he pulled his mace out and he maced me right in the face, he was like 5 feet away," said Shyann Koncsol. "It was horrible."
By morning, Spruce Street still had garbage and a burned out couch.
"Once everybody saw one fire, everyone ran up the street to it, then there was a huge crowd," said student Dean Herman.
But Corey Farris with the university says the couch burning tradition is an ongoing embarrassment.
"Probably it's alcohol-fueled," Farris said. "It's a disappointment to me, to the city, to their fellow students. Those that are acting foolish as really hurting the names of all students at the university."
No serious injuries were reported, but several people were arrested. Exact damage and arrest totals have not been released.
