Elderly Woman Found Bound, Murdered In North Braddock

NORTH BRADDOCK (KDKA) - A woman in her 90's was found dead in North Braddock on Monday.

It was a tragic crime scene at a small home in the 700 block of Jones Avenue in North Braddock. The elderly woman was found murdered in her bedroom.

"It's a very sad situation," North Braddock Police Chief Dean Bazzone said. "Never in my years did I think I would see something like this."

The victim, identified as 92-year-old Amelia Roman, lived alone in the two-story house.

She was found tied up in a first-floor bedroom. Police said the area where she was found had been converted into a kitchen, living room, sleeping area.

"The victim was bound - her arms and legs a little bit with duct tape - it's too early to say how much. She was covered with the blankets on the bed," Asst. Allegheny County Police Superintendent Jim Morton said. "The actor gained entrance by breaking a back window."

Roman's son, who lives in Florida, couldn't reach his mother by phone and called a neighbor. The victim's brother and the neighbor went into the house and found the elderly woman dead.

"It's just a shame. It's hard to believe someone would do something like that. My heart goes out to her family. It's just ruthless," neighbor Tim McConnell said.

Another neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, found it difficult to put her reaction into words.

"She never bothered no one. Oh my God, I mean, Jesus help us," she said.

On the KDKA-TV Facebook page, a woman in Florida who said she was the victim's granddaughter wrote: "My grandmother was defenseless and fragile. I hope the monster who just killed her rots in hell."

Allegheny County Police want to hear from anyone who thinks they may have seen or heard something, anything suspicious in the neighborhood.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
