Woman Falls Victim To Apple iTunes Scam In Mercer County

NEW WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- State police in Mercer County are warning people about a scam that cost a woman thousands of dollars.

The 86-year-old victim received a call from someone saying they were an attorney. The person on the phone claimed the victim's grandson was in jail because he was in a car accident.

At this point, the caller convinced the victim to go buy several thousand dollars worth of Apple iTunes cards and provide him with the card numbers when he called back.

The victim purchased the cards and provided the caller with the card number information. Police say the victim was able to freeze several of the cards after she realized that it was a scam.

State police say this scam is common and usually victimizes the elderly.

Troopers say you should consult with family or contact the police if you receive such a call in the future.
