Woman dies from injuries after shooting in Pittsburgh neighborhood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It was a deadly day in Pittsburgh, as two people were shot and killed in two separate neighborhoods.

Both shootings happened Sunday afternoon: one in Homewood and one in Manchester on Pittsburgh's North Side.

The first of those two shootings left a 21-year-old woman dead in Homewood. The medical examiner identified her as Heaven Budd.

Police say the shooting happened while she was waiting at a bus stop across from a new mural calling for peace.

KDKA-TV spoke to an eyewitness who called 911 to help the young woman right after the shooting. She told KDKA-TV what she saw in broad daylight.

"She was sitting on the bench at first; it happened so fast. I didn't hear a gunshot at first."

Just before 3 p.m., Pittsburgh police, fire and EMS responded to reports of a shooting at North Homewood Avenue and Finance Street by the east busway overpass.

"Heard gunshots and came out and saw what was going on, and a little girl was laying in the street, you know. Sad," Mark Thompkins said.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was shot with a gun leaving wounds to the upper body.

The eyewitness who asked to stay anonymous said she never heard the gunshot.

Eye witness anonymous:

"I don't know if it was because of the buses were passing by that I didn't hear it, but when I got down to the bus way, she was on the ground."

The victim was transported to the hospital in grave condition and was later pronounced dead.

This happened near the New Peace Over Pittsburgh African-American Generations mural.

It is being unveiled tomorrow after violence occurred so close to a place intended to spread peace.

A neighbor nearby shared his thoughts on the neighborhood.

"At first, I thought it was firecrackers, but being in this neighborhood, hearing a gunshot is normal," Thompkins added.

Violent Crime Unit detectives are investigating, and police are searching for the two males who fled the scene in a vehicle wearing masks and black clothing.
