Wet Weather Leads To Landslide, Road Closure In Thornburg

THORNBURG (KDKA)- The constant rain on Wednesday and into Thursday led to a landslide in Thornburg.

The landslide uprooted trees and brought rocks, branches and a support power line onto Cornell Road, as it broke part of a fence.

The debris spilled on to the road around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Cornell Road is closed between Steubenville Pike and Yale Road.

Thornburg Mayor Tom Mackin, says he'll contact the borough's engineer who will most likely request a study of the stability of the hillside.

Once it's safe, that's when crews will begin the process of removing the debris and re-open the road.

Cornell Road is one of three access roads for Thornburg, so residents will have two other options to enter the borough, while it is closed.

This isn't the first time part of Cornell Road has been closed because of a landslide. The mayor says it happened back in the 1990's. Then, the road had to be closed for more than a year.

No one was hurt and it doesn't appear the slide caused any power outages in the area.

The wet weather also caused crews to temporarily shut down Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh's East End. Mayor Bill Peduto tweeted that heavy rains caused about 6 to 8 inches of standing water along the roadway.

Washington Boulevard was closed in both directions as a precaution. It was reopened to traffic later on Wednesday night.
