Westmoreland County Teen Arrested in Florida, Accused Of Stealing $20K & Van

NORTH HUNTINGDON (KDKA) - An 18-year-old from Westmoreland County is facing charges after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a grocery store and skipping town.

According to police, an arrest warrant was out for Matthew Kifer, of Irwin.

Kifer was a manager at the Shop 'n Save on Route 30 in North Huntingdon. On March 3, police say he stole $20,000 from the store's safe and ATM and also took a van owned by the store.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, Leon County Sheriff's deputies observed a van driving without its headlights on in Tallahassee, Florida. Deputies pulled the van over and found Kifer inside.

While Kifer was searching for the vehicle registration and proof of insurance, deputies noticed a large amount of cash inside the vehicle. They were also told that the van was reported stolen out of North Huntingdon.

Kifer was taken into custody without incident. Deputies found marijuana on him, as well as $17,000. Police say he was in Florida for several days before he was pulled over in Tallahassee.

Kifer has been charged with marijuana possession, as well as theft and receiving stolen property.

The Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office is filing to have Kifer returned to North Huntingdon to face charges.
