Westmoreland Co. Man Headed To Trial In Girlfriend's Death

HARRISON CITY (KDKA) – A man accused in the fatal beating of his girlfriend is going to trial.

Shackled and handcuffed, 57-year-old Gregory Randall silently shuffled into his preliminary hearing Friday, charged in connection with the May murder of his girlfriend.

Randall was quiet, but inside, self-proclaimed pastor and witness for the prosecution, 51-year-old Carl Short had a lot to say.

"When he explained the murder, he was happy about it. That's what shook me," said Short.

Short met Randall when the two were being housed in the Westmoreland County Jail. Short is free on bond, accused of slicing a relative's face with a knife.

"He said, 'I'm like you. You're here for cutting somebody, I'm like that,'" Short said.

Short told the court Randall admitted to beating 52-year-old Angela Cavalero to death.

"He told me she hit him in the face with a frozen TV dinner," said Short. "He just snapped 'cause she was beating him all the time."

During a break, KDKA's Ross Guidotti asked Randall about Short's testimony.

Guidotti: "Mr. Randall, do you have anything to say about the proceedings today or what Mr. Short had to say on the stand?"

Randall: "He lies a lot."

Randall's murder charge was held for trial. He's being held without bond.

After the hearing, Cavalero's son spoke to the media.

"All she ever wanted to do was make him part of the family, incorporate him into the family," said Ray Bixler, the victim's son. "I just want justice for my mother, that's all. See him go to jail. Let him sit in there and contemplate his choices."

Court records show Randall pleaded guilty to simple assault, harassment and terroristic threats multiple times in the past.
