Westmoreland County cutting ties with Dr. Cyril Wecht

GREENSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) -- Westmoreland County is cutting ties with renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht.

Despite working for the county for nearly 60 years, he's finding himself out of a job.

Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson, who made the decision, said it's a combination of financial and forward-thinking reasons, saying he wants to make sure the county is best prepared for big mass casualties and police-involved shootings and doesn't know if he'd handle the workload.

Carson said Dr. Jennifer Hammers ended up carrying much of the workload these last few years. So when she put in a bid for the job, the county didn't want to lose her and picked her instead.

Dr. Wecht said he was blindsided. KDKA-TV's Meghan Schiller asked him if at 92, he wants to retire.

"I'm not a golfer and I used to like to play pinochle and poker and all of my fellow players are gone. People have abandoned me, they've deserted me, they're flying around in heaven with beautiful blonde angels," he said with a laugh.

Even though he's able to laugh about it, he said it seriously is hard when all your friends are gone. His heart is in his work, he says.
