Western Psych Shooting Suit Plaintiffs To Share $500K
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - Victims of a shooting rampage at a University of Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic will share a $500,000 settlement from the deceased gunman's estate.
The Tribune-Review said court records filed Monday state John Shick's renter's insurance policy will pay nearly $63,000 to each of the five victims or their families, and three others who claimed emotional distress.
The 30-year-old gunman walked into Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic on March 8, 2012, and opened fire, killing a therapist and wounding four others. Police shot and killed Shick.
Allegheny County Judge Stanton Wettick is expected to approve the settlement Friday.
An attorney representing 66-year-old Kathryn Leight, a receptionist who survived a gunshot to the chest, called the $500,000 sum "inadequate." Calls to others involved in the lawsuit weren't immediately returned.
The shooter's mother, Susan Shick, gave a deposition in December amidst several lawsuits.
She was sued by victims who said she knew her schizophrenic son was dangerous and failed to have her son involuntarily committed.
At the time of the shooting, Susan and husband Laurence Shick were sailing in the Caribbean.
