PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The day started out overcast, and now some storms and rain are expected to move in this afternoon to start the weekend.
The rain will come as a cold front surges through the area this afternoon. Ahead of the front, we have seen a low level jet form. A low level jet is a term used for strong southerly winds that develop ahead of a cold front. These winds pull in heat from the south and moisture and can rapidly destabilize the atmosphere.
Wind gust out of the south have closed in on 30 mph. Temperatures have rapidly increased as the LLJ has strengthened.

From 8 a.m. through 11 a.m., we have seen temperatures increase by 10 degrees.
By 2 p.m., at the latest, the cold front will be right on top of Pittsburgh, moving to the east rapidly. The line of storms didn't have a lot of lightning being detected in it as of 11:30 a.m.
Strong wind gusts will be the main concern as it rolls east at around 30-40 mph. Storms along the front are moving at around 45-50 mph to the northeast. This is just below severe warning criteria.
Storms are moving into central Ohio now. Start planning ahead and become prepared as they will move through our area later today. There is potential for strong to damaging winds with the stronger storms. #OHwx #PAwx #WVwx #MDwx pic.twitter.com/2PhyfxjrWf

Stormy conditions today are really confined to a window from around noon to 5 p.m. Any rain after that will be light with no lightning.
Saturday is expected to be dry.
We have a better severe weather set-up for Sunday with wind, hail and tornadoes all being possible. Sunday highs could hit 80 degrees, but KDKA Meteorologist Ron Smiley is forecasting a high of 77 degrees.
