17-year-old's body recovered from Monongahela River in Glassport

Water rescue searching for teenager in Glassport

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Crews recovered a body from the Monongahela River in Glassport early Saturday morning.

Officials were searching the river Friday night into Saturday morning for a 17-year-old boy who was swimming and fishing when he went under and did not resurface. The Glassport police chief said it happened in the area off Harrison Street by the borough's sewage plant.

The teen's adopted mother, a biological relative, told KDKA-TV the teen's name is Benjerman Coleman of McKeesport. She said he just turned 17 and was with his girlfriend and her parents at the time. She also shared that Coleman could not swim and said police told her that the people he was with were drinking. However, she said police would not confirm whether Coleman was drinking or not.

Crews were first called to the area around 8 p.m. on Friday. The chief told KDKA-TV the teen was with other people but could not say how many others were with him.

Officials were using drones in the water and boats to search for the teenager, who police say went under where the water is about 12 feet deep. Police said the teen was found 10 feet from where he was last seen.
