Warm Winter: Report Says Eastern US Alone In Having Extremely Cold February
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – Although in Pittsburgh – and in other parts of the East Coast – we shivered through February's record-breaking cold, we were pretty much alone.
Mashable reports that the Eastern US was just about the only place on Earth that didn't have an unusually hot month.
The National Weather Service said that Pittsburgh specifically had the second-coldest February since record-keeping began in 1871.
The average temperature for the month was around 18 degrees.
However, NASA says the western part of the country saw "record-warm temperatures." It calls the stark contrast in temperatures a dipole.
Mashable also writes that "much of the world saw above average temperatures during February, including nearly all of Eurasia, Australia, Africa and much of South America. Some areas, including in Russia, were up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit above average for the month."
