Upset Families Protest After Being Locked Out Of Cemetery Facing Imminent Bankruptcy
MUNHALL (KDKA) -- To the chants of "take the chain down" and "cut the chain," several dozen protestors gathered at the entrance to the Homestead Cemetery in Munhall Wednesday evening.
The graveyard has been closed temporarily, after ceasing operations last week when it ran out of money.
There's no longer a custodian on the grounds, and a chain was put up because of liability issues.
In the next few days, the cemetery will file for bankruptcy, and then the courts will appoint a trustee.
After that happens, the 130-year-old cemetery will reopen, according to the head of the cemetery's oversight board.
There was several "no trespassing" signs posted outside the cemetery. Protestors said the wind must have blown them away.
But, protestors like Sandy Wolfe, whose parents are buried there, say they're unhappy with the events that have led to the closing, and at the same time, they're upset that Munhall, Homestead and West Homestead are not stepping in to try to help solve the problem.
"My mother and father are buried here, and right now, I can't put a headstone on their graves," Wolfe said.
Protestors say they plan to attend next week's Munhall Borough Council meeting looking for some answers.
