Upper St. Clair Baseball Field Closed Due To Mine Subsidence
UPPER SAINT CLAIR (KDKA) – The baseball season on a local field has been cut short.
Late last week, a 60-square yard area of the largest baseball field at Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair dropped about three feet.
Experts from the Department of Environmental Protection say the collapse was caused by mine subsidence.
They came to check it out after coaches first noticed it, and will continue to monitor the field for another week to 10 days to see if it sinks any more.
After that, they'll try to figure out the best course of action to fix it; either repair the field or tear it up entirely.
Liz Williard of Upper St. Clair says, "This is a very popular facility. They've worked very hard to maintain it, to keep it in really good shape for the residents and people who use and they'll fix it."
There are other baseball fields in the complex, but, so far, the problem seems to be contained to only this field.
It's used mostly by the older teams - like PONY League.
The rest of their games this season have now been moved to other fields elsewhere in the township.
Upper St. Clair resident Michael Franusich says, "I think it's pretty rough on the community considering they've spent a lot of money on that baseball field, and also so many games are scheduled there. It just kind of impacts the whole scene."
The township's manager tells us the field will likely stay closed for the rest of the summer.
Experts from the U.S. Mine Bureau are also working with the DEP and township's own geo-tech employees to try to fix the problem.
