UPMC announces layoffs across non-clinical and non-member-facing roles
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A health care giant in the region is laying off about 1% of its workforce.
UPMC has confirmed to KDKA-TV that it is laying off workers across its 40-hospital system, half of which are in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Paul Wood, the vice president and chief communications officer for UPMC, said the layoffs are in response to post-pandemic challenges. About 1,000 employees were laid off.
"This realignment will not alter UPMC's investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care," Wood said in a statement on Wednesday.
Most of the layoffs are in non-clinical, non-member-facing roles. UPMC also said it is closing open positions and getting rid of redundancies.
UPMC, which reported a $198 million operating loss in 2023, is planning enhanced severance pay and benefits for anyone who is laid off.
No word on how much these current reductions will save Allegheny County's largest employer. UPMC's total operating revenue for 2023 was $27.7 billion.
