Unique Christmas Tree To Help Homeless Set Up On South Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A unique way to help the homeless this holiday season has popped up on the South Side.
A Christmas tree was spotted under the 10th Street Bridge near the end of a trail.
Alongside it were gloves, scarves and jackets for people in need.
There's also a sign that reads, "This Christmas tree is donated to the homeless in Pittsburgh. Anyone in need of an item they see on the tree is welcome to take."
Over the weekend, a woman posted a picture of the same tree decorated with canned food for the homeless.
Nancy Gibson of Brookline is the latest in a long line of "Santas."
"I was here walking the other day," she says, "and I saw the tree and read the plaque. I was really touched by it, and I thought, I have to bring something down."
The tree was set up by a young couple who decorated it with cans of food for the homeless. But clothing is just as important.
"I brought a coat and a couple pillows and some tee shirts," Nancy Gibson continues. "Maybe I'll look for more and bring it."
Necessities provided the night before are already helping someone ward off the winter chill.
"It would be horrible," Gibson says. "My heart goes out to those people, because it's just so sad that they have to live on the street. We should help them more, and do more them, especially in the winter time."
Small tree though it is, there's still room for more beneath those little branches.
People are encouraged to keep dropping items off at the tree throughout the holiday season.
