UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- State police are investigating an overnight shooting in South Union Township, Fayette County.
Police were called to Coal Lick Run Street in Uniontown around midnight.
Officials say that a man was outside of his home when he noticed someone else was inside his van.
State Police Trooper Robert Broadwater told KDKA, "The homeowner was on his back porch and heard something going on then saw that someone was inside his van."
What happened next is what could have ended up with someone seriously injured or even dead.
Trooper Broadwater said, "The suspect turns around and fires 4 shots toward the homeowner."
Officers and a forensics unit were on scene with evidence markers on the ground.
The suspect disappeared down Coal Lick Valley Road. Authorities say that two rounds landed in parts unknown, but the other two rounds pierced the glass of the homeowner's house and traveled past the wife of the homeowner. Investigators say they found on round lodged in the ceiling of the residence.
KDKA is told no one was transported from the scene.
According to police, the suspect is described as a slender built African American male in his late teens or early 20's. The suspect was wearing a bandana covering his face.
While it's understandable the homeowners wanted to grab the suspect but State Trooper Broadwater advises a different much safer approach.
"Call us. Don't take matters into your own hands, your life is valuable."
Investigators say there has been a rash of car break-ins in the area.
