Black Bear Tranquilized, Relocated After Running Through Uniontown

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) – A young black bear was tranquilized after running through a Fayette County community Monday afternoon.

Tipping the scales at 125-pounds, the young bear was first spotted near Pershing Court in Uniontown around 4 p.m. It quickly got people's attention and photos of the animal started circulating all over social media.

"We was going down Hickle [Street], on the way to the pet store, and we seen a big black bear going across the street. I was like, 'There's a bear!'" said Khia Brown, a resident.

Police and the state Game Commission were called to the area as the bear romped through several yards.

"I told him not you cannot play with the bear," said Knalece Ingram, of her very young son who was intrigued by the neighborhood visitor. "He ran down the hall to go outside. I was like, 'No, Joey, you cannot go out there.'"

A Game Commission officer eventually tranquilized the bear around 5:30 p.m.

Officials with the Game Commission think the animal was, at most, 2-years-old and got separated from his mother. He was relocated and is expected to survive.

He probably wont forget his visit to Uniontown. Those who saw him sure won't.

"It was really exciting to see a bear around here," said neighbor Gregory Ingram.

Officials are reminding residents to call 911 if you see a bear and to not approach it.
